Definition
A shift dress falls straight from the shoulder with a shirt collar and a full front opening, so large panels of cloth are visible at once. Gambiered silk gets its colour from yam-tuber juice, sun and river mud, which lets two lots of the same article sit at different depths.
Most enquiries on this shape arrive with the fabric already bought, so the cut and sew route is described here as plainly as the full make.
Cut and sew on cloth you supply
Send the cloth and we return finished garments together with the offcuts. On a two sided cloth we need your written instruction on which face to open, because that cannot be read off a roll. Metres in and garments out are reconciled on the packing list, with the balance shown there rather than at the end of the job.
Two lots of the same batch number
Colour is built up by sun and river mud, so depth drifts between lots even when the article number matches. We cut one purchase order from one lot and mark that lot on the carton. A re-order placed months later can read lighter or duller, which is a property of the process, so each re-order starts from an approval swatch.
All figures on this page are illustrative sample values, not measured specifications.
Can you make it on the gambiered cloth I already bought?
Yes, and that route is cut and sew only: we do not buy or replace the cloth and we do not re-dye it. Before cutting, tell us the width and which face to open.
